Marshall SV20 Double Tracked
Little experiment to see how it sounds double tracked, I was going for a late 70s rock tone.
Came up with the riff on the fly so was really hard to record it again identically ha ha.
I’m using the low input with less gain on one track and the high input with more gain on the other.
They are both hard pannned.
I’m not sure if it sounds a bit phasey but let me know what you think.
I’m wondering if I had some recording latency going on.

Marshall SV20 Snarl!

Dialled this in for an aggressive but not too high gain tone. Reminds me of Slash and Phil X. By backing the gain down and playing more aggressively to compensate you keep a clearer tone with more character and SNARL. I also cut some bass on the amp and added some back in with the attenuator to keep the preamp clearer. I think it makes for a good gutsy rock tone. Let me know what you think PS I...

Using the Boss SD1 as a kind of clean boost with the level nearly all the way up and the gain nearly off. been trying to get some more sustain for the more technical playing. I know this is a classic trick with overdrive pedals but it’s never really worked for me in the past. It works perfect in this scenario with the amp cranked and just adding some boost and compression with the pedal. I feel...

    Hey man I've been trying to design a tube gain stage circuit that sounds like you're boosting a Marshall style circuit for that 80's sound. Because it's tube based it has more of the natural crunchy harmonics and note definition. Great sounds all around, good job! The 80's were the end all for guitar tone for me, especially the rare mods that really push them into high gain territory.

    • @mattrobinson
      @mattrobinson 4 місяці тому

      Hi, I’ve actually watched some of your modded Marshall circuit videos before ha ha. Good work man. I cringe when I re watch this video because I had the pedal gain way to high and it just sounds over distorted 🤦‍♂️. I’ve learned to just use the pedal as a clean boost to keep things clearer now. I’ve recently tried the Hot Mod v2 in the amp to get that 80s rock sound and it sounds more natural with more dynamics but way more treble, suits heavy rhythm playing best to me. I still prefer a pedal for leads as the compression and the smoother tone helps with single note stuff.

    • @ironageamplification1791
      @ironageamplification1791 4 місяці тому

      Thanks, man! Yeah I totally get what you mean about the compression and feel when using pedals. I'm actually going to work on a Plexi style circuit where the first 2 stages are set to clip asymmetrically (like the boss sd-1), I'll let you know how it turns out haha. I've heard great things about the Hot Mod and the most recent George Lynch model as well. I think it uses a 12AT7 which has about 75% (I believe) of the gain of a 12AX7. George says it helps with the clarity of the distortion as well.@@mattrobinson

    What pots do you run with a humbucker and two singles? And what value tone cap are you using? This guitar sounds clear as a bell but full and has way better volume than most strats I have heard. Curious minds want to know

    • @mattrobinson
      @mattrobinson 4 місяці тому

      Hi, all pickups were wired to a single 500k volume pot with no tone pots or caps in the circuit. I did it because the blackstar amp I was using at the time was a very very dark amp so it balanced it out quite well. I sold the blackstar, got a Marshall plexi and it sounded horribly bright with this wiring so I converted the strat back to 3 singles and stock wiring. I much prefer my guitars with stock wiring through the plexi. It’s surprising how much the tone pots attenuate the treble frequencies though. Even on 10 they are still taking treble away. So it really all depends on the amp you are running through, Cutting the tone pots is another option if you need more treble and attack though.

    Looking for a set of pups for my Prs Starla SE… the og pups don’t sound of anything.. being a LP style guitar I think P90’s would be a great choice…trouble is there is a lot to choose from.. BareKnuckle, Seymour.. etc..

      I think all pickup types can be good in the right situation. If you like the sound of P90’s go with it. My advice would be to avoid getting wrapped up in the hype of expensive ones. It’s just magnets and wire at the end of the day. I like p90’s for clean tones and crunchy rhythm playing but find them a bit thin for lead tones, prefer a humbucker for lead tones. It’s all subjective though

    Hi! Does the Plexi Studio (sv20) have enough clean headdroom for small gigs!? (I don’t need a crystal clean) Maybe II should get a bigger plexi (1897x)?? Thanks

    • @mattrobinson
      @mattrobinson 5 місяців тому

      I’d go for the jtm45 if you want clean headroom but with a good Marshall crunch when cranked. The super lead type circuits like in the sv20 and 1987x etc are renowned for having early breakup so I think you would be chasing your tail to get real clean headroom out of one, if you’re playing mainly overdriven tones but backing guitar pot down to clean up like me though it’s perfect as it cleans up beautifully. It’ll never be as clean as a jtm45 or a fender though. With paf style humbuckers it starts getting overdriven at anything above 9:00. With single coils about 10:00-11:00 Hope this helps

    Great playing and fine tone. I love the Tonerider RockSong and have one in my Kramer. The Rocksong almost sounds like scooped mids but the clarity and dynamics are to die for. Sounds very much like Eddie Van Halen's first Franky guitar. The pickup he had in that was similar to a Rocksong...and has A2 magnets.

    It seems you have played most of the tonerider humbucker sets, which is your favorite? I’m debating between the Alnico ii and the Rocksongs. But not sure if either sounds good wired splitcoil or parallel…

    • @mattrobinson
      @mattrobinson 5 місяців тому

      I’ve played quite a few, the alnico ii classics are by far my favourite pickup I’ve ever tried by any brand. I found the rocksongs a little to pushed and modern by comparison. Probably better for heavier stuff but I just love the clean and natural sound of the ac2 classics for my tastes.

      @@mattrobinson thanks so much for the quick reply and for your thoughts about them. Yeah, bro your tone is amazing with those Alnico ii classics especially. I don’t think I have ever really played alnico ii pickups, mostly all Alnico 5 but I really want that vintage tone that has just a small touch of woolly-ness in it when you add a good amount of crunch OD to it. Zeppelin, AC/DC, ZZ Top all that goodness is what I’m shooting for but I’ll be happy if I can just get close. I’m going to put whichever set I choose in a Tele Deluxe that I have matched with a 24 3/4 scale conversion neck and hopefully I will get close to Gibson tone with the raw wood feel of lightly finished custom Fender style neck and playability. Anyway, thanks again and take take.

    Nice! I've been thinking about one of these ENGL to run my FM3 into, I'm currently uising it via FX loop of a couple of amps but I think a dedicated power amp like this will work better, am I correct in this idea? Also what guitar/pickups are you playing for this video? Cheers

    • @mattrobinson
      @mattrobinson 5 місяців тому

      Hi, I’m not sure how much better it would be running it though a dedicated power amp, depends on how good or bad your current power sections are. I liked the engl, never had any problems with it and it had a great thick yet tight response to it. I keep it simple now, just guitar into Marshall plexi and never been happier but the engl is good at what it does. Oh and the pickups were dimarzio evolution’s Cheers, Matt

      @@mattrobinson Oh I won't give up my JCM800 and my Dual Rec any day soon :-) But you know none of my amps have a post power section volume or true master volume, plus the Engl has presence and some sound tweaking stuff as well. Anyway, I've just ordered one today from Thomann as they had a B stock at a reasonable price. I'm in the UK so it'll take like a week. I'll report back. I noticed the past tense, what made you sell it? Cheers for the reply! George

      @@geomusicmove Yeah let me know how you get on. I was gigging with the axe fx and engl for a couple of years but never fully satisfied with my tone, there always seemed to be something missing no matter how I set everything. I plugged into an amp head one day at a guitar shop and realised what I’d been missing ha ha. I suppose I just prefer the sound of real amps. Works out cheaper for me too. Things have got better with modelling and amp profiling though so it’d probably be much closer to the real thing now

    • @geomusicmove

      @@mattrobinson You're right modelers are a lot of fun but they're not the real thing, nothing like the guitar signal running through actual valves! In my case the Fractal + power amp rig is for recording, a little variety and some fun, but for live play nothing like a real amp and cab for me. i'll leave my opinion once I've tried this power amp, on the other hand I like the idea of trying some nice preamps with it as well as in old school rack rig.
